Is your college kid missing their pet? As funny as it sounds, my son calls to talk to our dog on the phone in hopes to fill his “void” of his buddy! With all the flooding happening in the South it is very important that you prepare your family and your pet for disaster.

• Have a lightweight, strong carrier or crate for each dog.

• Keep a permanent, waterproof "Pets Live Here" sign near your doorbell, this will alert community service workers that you have a pet(s).

• First thing you can do is keep calm! Be relaxed and he or she will pick up on that
• Do not force your dog to approach spooky yard decorations or laughing skeletons.
• Be careful forcing to your dog to lay down or “be nice”, aggression often comes from dogs that are forced into a “spooky” situation.
• Utilize his or her crate if she is crate trained. Put in another room with a favorite toy and turn on the TV for sound.
• If your dog is allowed to be in with the excitement, what the front door, as they can bolt out quickly and with all the HOOPLA going on, they could run into the street.
• Keep candy away from your dog! Sometimes while checking the candy or wiping off the face makeup from our little human ghouls, we forget about our pet being in the living room susceptible to yummy Milk Duds! • Pet Diabetes – Yes, pets can have diabetes too sometimes requiring insulin and or oral medications.
• Skin Cancer in dogs and cats – You would think that with hair covering most of a dog’s body they would not get skin cancer or need sun block, but they do. Pay close attention to ears and noses.
• Acne – Dogs and cats can have "breakouts" too. Most pets are not stricken by acne but some cases are severe and can become painful and itchy.
• Cataracts – Cataracts in pets can be caused by an underlying condition such as diabetes or malnutrition or radiation or trauma. It also could be just plain old age. Surgery could be required if the case becomes too bad. .
• Stomach Ulcers – Stomach ulcers in pets can be horribly painful and they may vomit or show discomfort. Ulcers can be caused by cancer, liver or kidney disease as well as other things.
• Laryngitis – I know for a fact about pet laryngitis as my dachshunds bark hour after hour after hour and at the end of the day sometimes sound very raspy. Other things that can cause laryngitis in pets are respiratory tract infections, allergies, etc. Also, be careful spraying inhalants around your pet.
• Pet Allergies – Pets can get allergies from bites, and in pollen of plants and even sometimes can be allergic to the food you are feeding them. Try rubbing their paws for allergies with some great products that are natural!

Get some insurance for your pet and take "man's best friend" to the vet. They could be suffering from a condition and you not even know it.
