4th of July Safety Tips for your dog!

While we all look forward to the 4th of July with the parade, then the picnic and then on to watch the fireworks that evening, dogs can sometimes struggle a bit with your idea of fun and excitement.

Let's just say it this way~not all dogs are the same with the same behavior and the same temperament. Some dogs are very easy going and laid back while others are anxious and nervous. Not sure if the 4th of July is the time to see which category your dog falls in to. There are many alternatives you can choose to still include your dog in the activities, such as dressing him up in patriotic clothes or giving him precious little red, white and blue dog treats.

There are some 4th of July dog safety tips that all dog owners need to follow; whether or not you drag your dog to the fireworks shows or not:

1/ Think the fireworks display through when contemplating on taking your dog.
2/ If you leave your dog at home, make sure he is indoors in the evening time and in a quiet area. Many dogs become scared and anxious when the fireworks go off and terrify these dogs. Some dog's just do not like loud noises.
3/ Put on the radio or television when you leave your dog in the home to avoid hearing the BOOM of the fireworks.
4/ Think about getting your dog a special 4th of July dog treat or patriotic dog toy to keep him happy and busy while you are gone.

If you must leave your dog outdoors, please make sure the following steps are taken:

1/ Are you dog's id tags and collar tags up to date and on his collar, just in case he gets out of your yard?
2/ Secure your fence in the yard and make sure there isn't any area that your dog can escape.
3/ Make sure the dog bowl is filled with clean water, it is July and it is hot.

Everyone loves the 4th of July with the sparklers and the smell of the fireworks in the night, just remember our furry little friends might not love it so much.

For more tips of 4th of July Safety tips for your dog, visit the United States Human Society website. Many good ideas and suggestions are often found from your local Human Societies or visit your local Veterinarian for safety tips or concerns about your dog.

We dress our dog's up in the precious patriotic dog clothes and strut him around like he is Uncle Sam and that is fine as long we take into consideration that all the hype could stress out our dog. So, dress your dog up all you want and buy him the great patriotic dog toys and 4th of July dog treats, but please re-consider taking him to the fireworks shows.

Grab your flags and enjoy the 4th from
Doggie Couture Shop!

National Take your Dog to Work Day - 2010

Dog owners are on a natural high these days as dog ownership has increased to a whopping 72 million! That means that 72 million families or individuals own dogs all over the United States. That is a great number for dog lovers.

We are spending more and more on our pets than before and take them on more activities with us than before. No more are the days of "no pets allowed" because many people tote their pup along with them. June 25 is "National Take your Dog to Work Day". This fun day was created in 1999 by Pet Sitter International to celebrate the relationships between humans and their dogs and to promote dog adoption.

Of course, not all dogs are going to be on their best behavior therefore there are some guidelines and steps to taking your dog to work:

Make sure to keep your dog in your own work area and not allow him or her to roam throughout the office.

Take your dog to do "his business" before you walk into the office, just to avoid any accidents

Provide water and a clean bowl for your dog

Don't take your dog to work with you if he has fleas or isn't clean

Make sure to clean your work station before you take your dog, make sure there are no exposed cords, etc.

Make sure when you take your dog outside that you come prepared with poop bags and poop accessories

Take your dog his favorite dog blanket or dog bed and bring your dog's favorite dog toy or bring some dog treats

Most of all, enjoy the "not so normal day" with your dog at work and celebrate "Take your dog to work day".

For more information on "Take your dog to work day", visit TakeyourDog.com. You can download helpful information about dog adoption and upcoming events that involve your dog.

Summertime pests and your dog

Fleas, ticks and mosquito's can be harmful to your dog and when using certain brands of flea and tick drugs, sometimes can be fatal to your dog. Sometimes a dog’s immune system and thyroid function can be harmed by using harsh chemicals and at time neurological issues can occur. Try some “common sense” actions to prevent your dog from getting sick this summer outside.

Since pet owners are trying to be a bit more cautious these days as to what they use in their yards and what they put on their pets, a more natural approach to the summertime pests can be simple:

1/ Check your dog with a flea comb to see whether or not he really has fleas

2/ Vacuum your home every week and empty the container outside in a trashbag and seal up.

3/ Wash a dog’s bedding and blankets every week in hot water

4/ Remove any long brush or dead vegetation from the yard

5/ You can add one teaspoon of brewer’s yeast (not baking yeast) to your dog’s food.

6/ Spray your dog down with a flowery scented shampoo diluted with water and let air dry

7/ If fleas are out of control at your home, a safe dog shampoo with
pyrethrin is a great fix
8/ You can add chopped fresh garlic to your dog’s food everyday

9/ You can rub citronella or peppermint in their fur to also repel flies and other insects

10/ Empty all standing water in fountains, containers, buckets, bird baths and potted plants to help control mosquito's

11/ Mow your yard weekly

12/ Keep your dog indoors at dawn and dusk which is peak time for mosquito activity

It’s relatively a quick fix if you start to take control immediately before
the flea/tick or mosquito’s get out of hand. Dog owners should see their veterinarians if your dog shows signs of fever, depression, lack of coordination, muscle weakness or any type of seizures.

There are great dog grooming items to help with dog hot spots and soothing dog conditioners to help when the critters bite.

Let your dog enjoy his summer too but watch out for those nasty little outdoor pests that can also plague humans. Since we are in the middle of
National Mosquito Control Awareness Week 2010 ( June 20-26) you can visit the American Mosquito Control Association for helpful hints about controlling mosquito's and your dog.

It's work out time with your dog!

By now summer is officially here and it's bikini weather for all! Time to get in shape and look your best, you and your dog.

When you go for your run, walk or going to the lake, take your dog! Your dog will be the best workout partner you will find. Your best friend will love to spend time with you and it get's them out exercising too.

When working out with your dog in the outside heat there are many things to look for like heavy panting, confusion, vomiting and diarrhea. It is so important to watch for these warning signs of heat exhaustion with you and your dog. It is a great idea to exercise but not such a great idea not to take precautions when out in the heat.

Since dogs don't sweat it is imperative that they get plenty of water to drink. A dog's moisture comes from their mouth and dehydration can set in quickly. General rule of thumb is, if you are thirsty so is your dog.

Make sure you carry cool fresh water for your dog and at Doggie Couture Shop we have many portable dog water bowls and carriers for those much needed times. Dog professionals recommend splashing cool water on your dogs ears and neck to help keep them cool. You can also keep their neck cool with a cooling dog bandana.

Protect a dog's eyes with Doggles as their eyes can become damaged by the harmful sun rays just like a human's eyes can. Also, use dog sunblock, dogs can get sunburned and it is quite painful for them too. Help those hot spots with the soothing hot spot dog cream and it helps minor irritations. Moisturizes their skin too. A dog hat is a excellent idea to protect your dog from the UV rays while outside too!

Whether you are running outside, walking or throwing a frisbee this summer, take your dog with you and protect him from the heat so that your workout partner is around for a long time. Try some great new dog toys to make your workout fun such as the Football Dog Toy, or a Wing a Ball Toy.

If you decide to workout indoors, try a dog treadmill right beside your treadmill.

Have a fun workout this summer and keep hydrated and protected in the summer sun!
