Adopting for the New Year!

Happy New Year! This stretch of celebrations is full of memories with family, time spent with friends and the spirit of giving and helping others (and yourself) grow in any way possible!

The New Year is here, and with that comes the often broken New Years resolutions ha! For pet owners, this can be a time to focus on some ways to become a great pet owner and to better include your furry friend in your family.

A common New Years Resolution is to adopt a pet. Dogs and cats are typically the first to come to mind in pet adoption conversations, but did you know you could adopt any kind of pet, from ferrets to bunnies, birds and guinea pigs.

Before making a New Years resolution to adopt a pet and bring it in to your home, make sure to do adequate research on the needs of your pet and what they will bring to your family and into your life. Different pets have different needs, so make sure and research the differences between various pets and check the local animal shelter for those in need of adoption.

Doggie Couture Shop's passion is making the life of a pet worthwhile and loved. Doggie Couture Shop has a large selection of "adopt me" dog apparel and things to make the transition an easy one should you decide to take that leap of faith. It's that time again .........get a shelter dog!

The upcoming months are often referred to as "giving months" - November is for being thankful for the things and people we have and December is about giving to those we love and to those that are less fortunate. Why not go ahead and give now.. the gift of a life for a dog?

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and of course, Doggie Couture Shop wants all of our shoppers to support all the local dog shelters and help fight against Puppy Mills. When you adopt a dog from a dog shelter you are saving a life and adding joy to your home and your family.

Make sure that you choose the right dog for you and your family if you take advantage of this wonderful opportunity:
  • Do you need a small dog or can your home and yard support a larger dog?
  • What age dog do you want? Older dogs require more medical attention and younger dogs will require more exercise.
  • Are you sticking to a "purebreed" or are you going to take a mixed breed?
  • Match your personality to the dog's personality.
Make sure that when you adopt a dog from a shelter that you commit to taking care of this animal and show him patience and love that he has never known.

Doggie Couture Shop is passionate about dogs and finding homes for dogs that need good people in their lives. Doggie Couture Shop has dog items that will help any new dog owner show love and caring for their new best friend. Doggie Couture Shop has an entire line of wonderful dog carriers, dog beds, dog collars and dog leashes. Doggie Couture Shop also is so proud to have a great variety of new dog gifts. You can pick from Puppy toys, new puppy dog treats and so many more dog items that will make your new friend Bark WITH JOY!

Sit back this October and watch how your life will be enriched when you add a dog to your life.

October is such a fun and spooky Month, lots going on with events, parties and just life but can also be a productive life changing month for you and your family.

If you have been thinking of adopting a dog, now is the time to do it. October is Adopt a Dog Month! I personally believe and support supporting shelters and adopting shelter dogs and I know that you can too.

Each October, the American Humane Association along with local animal shelters across the country in promoting Adopt-A-Dog Month. Adopt a Dog Month is a large national campaign to highlight homeless dogs waiting to be adopted.

October is focused and used to encourage people to visit their local animal shelter first to adopt their new best friend."Right now there are millions of loving dogs in every size and shape imaginable waiting anxiously in local shelters for a home of their own", says the  American Humane's President and CEO.

There are many types of dogs to choose from when you go to a shelter, different sizes, shapes, energy levels and breed. Have an open mind and a open heart when you visit but make sure that the dog you choose fits your family and your lifestyle. There is a adoption process to go through and ways that you can find out if you are ready for a dog.

Why not spoil your new friend and get him everything he needs before he gets there. Your new buddy will need a- ID tag, food, bowls, leash, collar, dog den, and toys.
If you get a puppy, make sure you have housebreaking items, and lots of chew toys as well!

Enjoy your October and your new friend.

How much is that Doggy in the window?

At some point in your life, or your kid’s their main Christmas/Birthday request has been a new puppy! I use the same response, "We will see".. but it gets old and they just keep asking. Why not really, a dog is one of the great pleasures of life. If you are considering giving in to your kids and getting a new puppy there are some things to think about before taking the big plunge!!!

  • Think about what your family wants and what their needs are. What is your lifestyle? Make sure that when you go to pick out a doggie that you match your family to that particular pup. If your family is laid back and mellow, choose a dog that is low maintenance and doesn’t require hours of brushing, grooming and exercising. If you have a small apt or small house or space, choose a smaller dog. There are many articles about breeds of dogs and which ones are best for your family.
  • Make sure your family is aware of changes that will occur when Fido enters the family. There are responsibilities that come with being a pet owner. Set guidelines for the kids and make a list of who feeds him on what day and make it a family chore. Make sure that the kids know that life will no longer be the same for the good and the bad when you own a pet. Who will have Poo Poo pickup? Who will walk the dog? Who will wash the dog?
  • The fun begins! Time to go and buy the items that the little pooch will need. If buying a puppy, try great housebreaking items, and you may need a crate if planning to crate train. You will need dog food, treats, bedding and a dog brush to brush him with. Buy your collar (there are some great ones out there) and your leash and please don’t forget clothes! Doggies require fashion too!

A dog is a blessed addition to families~ and kids get many hours of enjoyment and friendship from a pet. Think of adopting a pet from a homeless animal shelter or buying from a rescue group, I think in the long run your family will be so happy to have saved a dog and got a best friend at the same time!
