Be sure to wipe them down completely after coming from outside because they could ingest antifreeze or other harmful chemicals from licking their paws. Take care of those "tootsies" this winter!

One of the most overlooked responsibilities that dog owners have is taking care of their pet's feet! No, this doesn't always mean painting their nails, although it can! Caring for your dog's feet means being carefully examined and taken care of because they walk barefoot everywhere and everyday!

While dogs do have a much more durable "sole" on their feet, any damage to their paws can cause some severe problems. A small cut in the foot can injure ligaments and tendons that create toe position, you'll notice this when a pup's toe points upward.

Speaking of nails, you need to cut your pup's toenails monthly. Long toenails can cause extreme discomfort, almost to the extent of making the dog immobile. When trimming the nails, look right above the lightly colored red speck that begins at the physical toe and extends through the nail, and cut right below it. The red indicated the blood supply for the dog and cutting into it could cause some problems that would need professional attention.

Paw care for dogs ... a mini pawdicure

Humans do not spare any expense on foot care with pedicures, massages and seeing Podiatrist's. Little did we know that a dog's paw is not only make for walking but also to protect him from other things.

The pad of a dog's foot is also made to protect your dog's foot from the harsh outdoor elements, provide extra cushioning and protect the tissue deep inside the foot. There are some very important tips for maintaining good paw care for your dog.

Trim and Clip the paw hair to avoid matting and comb out the hair around the paw.
Trim nails often - If you are unable to take your dog to the Vet regularly to have his nails trimmed, ask your Vet how to trim his nails correctly so that you can do it at home. You can also try the Gentle Paws Nail Trimmer.

Inspect your dog's paws- often small pieces of debris can be found between your dog's paws. Small pieces of wood, glass or just dirt can become lodge deep within the paws becoming very painful. Make sure to have a pair of tweezers around if you should find something in the crease of the paw that you are unable to get out.

Moisten the paws - dog paws can become very dry and crack, make sure you are keeping the paw pad moist with something like Paw Rub by Cain and Abel.

Always rub your dog's feet as if you were massaging your own feet. Watch for pain in any areas and be slow and gentle.

Apply first aid to any open cuts or wounds on your dog's paw. Make sure you are carrying a First Aid kit for Dogs. Not just any first aid kit will work on a dog or cat.

Winter weather and your pets

With the Artic Blast headed our way and colder temperatures than normal across the country and some wind chills down to zero, it is so important to keep our family pets safe and warm.

Because animals rely on their human caregivers to keep them safe, especially in these harsh winter months, it is important to take a few extra steps to take care of the ones we love.

You might think that because dogs have fur that they are protected from the cold and harsh weather, but the fur has a tendency to gather ice or snowflakes that can make even the furriest dog cold. Dogs get cold and there are things that we can do to prevent serious health issues in the dead of winter.

Make sure that your dog has an adequate doghouse outside if you have to leave him out. Although it is not recommended to leave any pet outside in the cold elements, if they absolutely must be left outside please make sure there is a closed warm area for him to lay.

Keep your pets away from Antifreeze. Dogs love it but even in small amounts could be deadly.

Make sure you are checking your dog for frostbite and drying his fur when he enters back into the home. Ear tips are especially susceptible to frostbite on dogs and snow can get up in the footpad of your pet as well.

Get your dog winter apparel to help make them more comfortable. There are dog boots to protect the paws and even dog socks for those cold nights. Try a nice dog sweater or winter coat to make sure they are warm when going out into the freezing winter weather.

Trim the hair around your dog’s feet. You can even apply Vaseline or cooking oil to the bottom of their feet before going outside. The layer of oil or moisture barrier will prevent ice from sticking to their paws. You could try Snout Smoother for chapped ears and dry skin!

Try not to use salt on the sidewalks because it can be irritating to the footpad. If they do get salt on the foot are, wipe off as soon as the come in.

Don’t ever leave your dog in a car, hot or cold. If you cannot take them in, leave them at home.
